The following is an excerpt from the workbook for the "Self Hypnosis for the Life You Want" course that I teach.
Affirmations are short phrases always expressed in a positive sense that can change the way in which we think about things. If the way in which we think about things changes, then the way we act changes.
Because it is natural for the conscious mind to be negative, our minds can be filled with lots of negative chatter, or self-talk. Affirmations can be used to counteract or replace the negative self-talk in which we all sometimes engage.
If you have a “favorite” negative thought, then create a positive affirmation to counteract it. For example, if you have a tendency to become impatient with yourself and frequently find yourself saying, “I can’t wait until this is over” in certain situations, then try using an affirmation like “I am patient with myself.”
Here are simple steps to follow to creating your own positive affirmations:
- Always express in the present tense.
- Always express in the most positive way that you can.
- Use precise and concise phrases. One simple sentence is enough.
- Always choose affirmations that feel absolutely right for you.
- Create something new and fresh with your affirmation. Do not attempt to redo or change what already exists. Affirmations are not meant to change or contradict your feelings or emotions because that can cause resistance or inner conflict.
- Recite your affirmations with a feeling of belief, that they are always true.
- Use repetition, repetition, repetition.
- Start out small and build upon success.
Many people advocate using “I am” as an integral part of the affirmation, as earlier example demonstrated, such as: “I am patient with myself.” This may evoke an intellectual response. An alternative, heart-centered approach would be to use “I feel”. By telling yourself how you feel instead of what you are, it is possible to tap into the deeper significance of the affirmation. Try your affirmation both ways and see which works best for you.
If doubts, resistance or negative thoughts interfere with doing affirmations, then use self-hypnosis to discover the source of the interference and remove it. Then reapply the affirmation.
