Self-hypnosis is process by which a person completely and deeply relaxes their body, and as a result their conscious mind becomes calm and lets go of its guardianship over their subconscious mind. Being very impressionable and now free of the usual interference and filtering of the conscious mind, the subconscious becomes easily reached by, and may be influenced by, outside ideas or suggestions. At this point a person can be said to be in a self-hypnotic state or condition.

The subconscious is where all learning and habits, good or bad, reside. Once a person is in a self-hypnotic condition it is possible for them to directly deliver to the subconscious mind ideas or suggestions that may bring about a change to learning, or to alter habits. That is, of course, only if those ideas and suggestions do not conflict with pre-existing subconscious beliefs and motives. In which case, the subconscious mind would reject such ideas and suggestions.

This class teaches two essential aspects of the art of self-hypnosis:

1. How to enter and emerge from a self-hypnotic condition at will;

2. How to formulate and then apply appropriate ideas and suggestions for self improvement which are accepted by the subconscious while in a self-hypnotic condition.

The class is conducted in a concentrated workshop format. Students participate in fun and fascinating activities and demonstrations which reveal the power of the subconscious over the conscious mind. They learn and actually use self-hypnosis on the second day of class. By the third day they know how to formulate suggestions and autosuggestions. On the fourth and final day they are planning their own self-hypnosis sessions and evaluating and creating scripts for themselves.

Students who successfully complete the course receive a printed certificate of achievement.

You’ve been doing this since childhood

To borrow from computer terminology, self-hypnosis is a part of your built-in operating system. Ever present since birth, you have automatically self-activated the hypnotic state many times throughout your life without ever having to think about it, without realizing it. Self-hypnosis is a natural part of human nature. Why leave such a powerful and useful tool unattended, undirected and at the apparent whim of happenstance?

You used self-hypnosis while learning to walk, talk, tie your shoe laces or ride your bike. In fact, many activities like singing, playing or listening to music, watching television or a movie, creating a piece of art, reading, writing, dancing or acting can bring you to a hypnotic state.

Have you ever been so immersed in an activity to the exclusion of the outside world and all its distractions? Then you have experienced moments of self-hypnosis.


Apply, rinse and repeat

When a person seeks the services of a hypnotist it is usually to address a personal issue or problem. The issue isn’t a primary medical condition requiring doctor’s care but rather something that negatively affects their life in an annoying, embarrassing, distracting or possibly hindering way. In the broadest sense, these issues tend to be bad or unwanted habits, or unwanted reactions to events or people in the workplace or at home. We can see from hypnotist’s advertisements the most “popular” bad habits are smoking, over eating and stress.

A professional hypnotist will use various hypnotic techniques to help remedy a client’s issue. As part of the hypnosis sessions the hypnotist usually gives the client some basic training in self-hypnosis, perhaps a CD recording to reinforce the work done in the session, and may even offer to coach them afterward to ensure long term success. If the client develops a new issue, or has a recurrence of an old one—off to see the hypnotist they go. Apply, rinse, repeat—to paraphrase bottled shampoo instructions.

So by now it may have occurred to you: There was no hypnotist around when my bad habits were formed. Why do I need one now to undo them? Most likely you don’t, especially for those little everyday things that you do, but that you don’t want to do, yet still do despite your best intentions and strongest efforts of willpower to not do them. But here’s a secret. There was a hypnotist present when you acquired that bad habit in the first place. Can you guess who it was?


“All hypnosis is self-hypnosis”

Most hypnotists are fond of saying that. They know it, most everyone else doesn’t. Essentially all the hypnotist does to put a client into hypnosis is to give the client a series of simple instructions to follow. No matter who gives the instructions—whether it is the hypnotist, the client himself or herself, or a CD recording—when the client follows those instructions, self-hypnosis is achieved. Notice the operative word here: self-hypnosis. It’s done by the self, to the self. Contrary to popular misconceptions no one can force hypnosis on anyone. They can’t make hypnosis happen. You let it happen.

Once a person is hypnotized the hypnotist delivers a series of carefully chosen verbal suggestions designed to bring about the desired changes in behavior or habit. The art of the hypnotist is in knowing what to say, when to say it and how to say it.

So just like the shaky scarecrow standing with Dorothy before the Wizard of Oz we ask, “Then what’s a hypnotist got that I ain’t?” The Wizard replies, “Why, my friend, just a little knowledge of the human mind and body, that’s all! In fact, you already have the mental tools. And the power resides within you to make all the changes that you desire. You had it all along.”


Be your own hypnotist

Most people learn how to do self-hypnosis in about 15 minutes. That’s about what it takes to understand and master the basic concepts. They get better at self-hypnosis every time they do it. That’s because it is a learned skill. Repeated use or practice brings improvement. That’s the easy part.

But knowing how to do self-hypnosis is not enough. Once you have learned the mechanics of self-hypnosis you must do something more with it: do some inner work to make changes in your life; begin new learning or relearning of behavior, for example. That part is a little more difficult but it is within everyone’s ability—remember, for all intents and purposes but unknowingly, you have been doing this since birth—and the next part is the art of suggestion and autosuggestion.

Suggestions and autosuggestions are words that you say or pictures you imagine to yourself while hypnotized to bring about the change you desire. Even though you are self-hypnotized you are able to direct your own thoughts because you are always in control of yourself at all times during self-hypnosis.

Self-hypnosis is like starting the engine of a car—not very interesting or useful by itself. But suggestion and autosuggestion is like putting the car in gear and speeding away. That’s where the real power of self-hypnosis comes from.

Yet it is that simple: go into self-hypnosis, say descriptive words and phrases to yourself or imagine movie-like or photographic-like scenes to make the changes you want, then come out of self-hypnosis and go about your day. If this sounds like daydreaming, it is because it is very similar, as are the sensations. You can do self-hypnosis just about anywhere or anytime you want, as often as you want, in as little as five to ten minutes if you wish.

Through this course you will experience and become consciously aware of your physical sensations and mental state during self-hypnosis, and enter and emerge from self-hypnosis at will. You will create and plan effective sessions for yourself, better than any hypnotist ever could, because you know yourself better than any hypnotist. That includes choosing the appropriate self-hypnotic techniques to use for modifying imprints and preventing their formation, and altering habits and behavior. You will develop a lifelong skill which enables you to make positive changes from within yourself, by yourself and for yourself without the need of a hypnotist.


The hypnosis laundry list

Go to any hypnotist website or read their pamphlets or flyers and chances are you may find a long laundry list of problems and issues that hypnotists and hypnosis can solve. Here is my list for the people completing my self-hypnosis course. It’s just five items long.

By the conclusion of this course you will discover how to use self-hypnosis and hypnotic techniques to:

* Alter bad habits for the better

* Remove imprints made on you earlier in life

* Prevent imprints from being made on you now and in the future

Mastering the Art of Self-Hypnosis

This course comprises four 1-1/2 hour sessions. As you will see in the course outline below, these sessions are highly concentrated. Each session is a complete self-contained lesson. If a session is missed, there is no opportunity in any remaining sessions to make up for that lost learning. Please make every effort to attend all four sessions. I intend, but cannot guarantee, to cover all the topics listed below. Occasionally a class has an overriding interest in one topic to the time detriment of another topic and as a result one of the lesser topics will get eliminated from the session.


Session 1. Introduction to Self-hypnosis


The Mind, Imprints and Self-hypnosis

The first session introduces the concept of self-hypnosis, explores the functions of the conscious and subconscious mind and the difference between them, and provides insight into why self-hypnosis is a facilitator of inner change.


1. Four functions of the conscious mind;

2. 25 precepts of the subconscious mind;

3. Physical response to real or imagined thoughts;

4. Four ways to bypass the conscious mind;

5. Early age development of values—imprints, their means and modes;

6. Sensory preference learning survey;

7. Working definitions of self-hypnosis and how self-hypnosis is a natural outcome of the functions of the conscious and subconscious mind;

8. Selected historical highlights—three influential men of self-hypnosis;

9. Myths, unfounded fears and misconceptions about self-hypnosis.

End Results:

1. You can define self-hypnosis;

2. You can differentiate between myths and facts concerning self-hypnosis;

3. You can describe functions of the conscious mind and rules of the subconscious mind;

4. You can list several sources of imprints and describe their causes and sources;

5. You experience the subconscious mind as a stronger force than the conscious mind.


Session 2. The Art of Self-hypnosis


This session is highly experiential and includes three separate self-hypnosis sessions designed to familiarize the student with the self-hypnosis process and prepare the student to perform self-hypnosis on their self.


1. The 6 steps of self-hypnosis;

2. Experiential: Salter’s fractional self-hypnosis;

3. Experiential: Salter’s scripted/memorized self-hypnosis;

4. Experiential: Salter’s self-hypnosis by post-hypnotic suggestion.

End Results:

1. You can enter and emerge from self-hypnosis by your self.


Session 3. The Art of Suggestion and Autosuggestion


What We Say and Think Matters

Self-hypnosis is a process which opens the mind to new possibilities, but does little beyond that. This session includes various self-hypnotic techniques to deal with everyday issues and problems, and how to “speak” to yourself during self-hypnosis and what kinds of things to say.


1. Long term memory, recall and learning;

2. Definitions of suggestion and autosuggestion;

3. The laws of suggestion, types and delivery;

4. Formulating verbal and imagery suggestions and style guidelines;

5. Other powerful forms of suggestions and some undesirable forms;

6. Facilitating the acceptance of suggestions;

7. Affirmations;

8. Bedtime autosuggestions;

9. Removing and preventing imprints.

End Results:

1. You develop appreciation for how human reactions to situations are merely imprints automatically playing back procedural memories in response to real or imagined cues or triggers;

2. You can formulate verbal and imagery suggestions that you can use during self-hypnosis;

3. You can describe five or more ways to remove and prevent imprints.


Session 4. How to Proceed


Planning and Scripting Successful Self-hypnosis Sessions

In the final session students will examine sample scripts to see how self-hypnotic techniques can be used to solve issues. They will also begin using a self-hypnosis plan worksheet to plan their first after-course session. If time allows there will be a group hypnosis session to reinforce their learning.

Mastering the Art of Self-Hypnosis Course Workbook
